This course provides candidates in the Designated Subjects Career Technical Education (CTE) Credential Program with an understanding of how to teach occupationally-oriented content to English Learners as well as students with special needs. Candidates will learn the stages of language acquisition, nonlinguistic representations, cooperative learning, and Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) teaching strategies, and reflect on how these factors come together in the classroom. Background principles underlying the cultural, linguistic, and sociocultural contexts and foundations of learning will be explored. The CTE teacher's role and responsibilities with special needs students along with instructional strategies will be examined. Candidates will practice utilizing a comprehensive framework for educating both English learners and students with special needs in their CTE programs. This course is mandatory for candidates in the CTE Credential Program and is a prerequisite for the Teaching Portfolio course.
